EDEN is a haunting drama about one woman's extraordinary journey toward self-discovery. Written and directed by Howard Goldberg, Eden stars Joanna Going, Dylan Walsh and Sean Patrick Flanery. Set in 1965, when society was on the brink of enormous social changes, Eden tells the story of Helen, a young woman whose life is still governed by the age-old rules. A devoted wife and mother, Helen lives on the campus of the conservative prep school where her husband (Walsh) is a teacher (and where they themselves were educated). Hardly older than the students, Helen already has two children of her own and must also minister to the needs of their enamored boarder (Flanery), a teen-ager bursting with possibilities. But these possibilities don't exist for Helen, who, in addition to her other burdens, is feeling the debilitating effects of the multiple sclerosis that is sapping her strength and limiting her mobility. But, instead of collapsing under the weight of these problems, Helen experiences something quite surprising for a woman of her time and temperament. She discovers that she is able to leave her body and soar above the very reality that threatens to submerge her. If Helen's "flights" are not actual, the changes they bring about in the way she sees the world - and is seen by it - are very real. Subtly balancing herself between the mundanity of Helen's exterior life and the mysticism of her inner world, Joanna Going proves to be an actress of uncommon beauty, grace and technical skill. Likewise, EDEN, by evoking a more innocent, less enlightened time, and simultaneously creating a powerful metaphor for female emergence, reveals Goldberg to be a filmmaker to watch. |
